Former McNeil Music Center (MMC) violin student, Thomas Hudson, is joining the MMC staff as a violin instructor through August. Working closely with his former violin instructor, Bill McNeil, Hudson will be teaching violin and gaining valuable experience in the field of music education.
“Thomas is a very bright and hardworking student,” said McNeil. “Now, he gets to sit on the other side of the aisle and pass along what he has learned. I’m thrilled to have a former student come back home and work in the studio.”
Hudson was born in Kentucky, but has also lived in North Carolina and Alabama before returning to Kentucky in 2015. At age 12, he began playing guitar, and since then has learned bass guitar, violin, and piano. As a History Teaching major at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Hudson has chosen Music as a minor, to continue to pursue his passion for music and share it with others.
Hudson now studies violin under Dr. Colleen Ferguson and has played with the EKU Symphony Orchestra and EKU String Symphony Orchestra. He also regularly plays bass guitar for his campus ministry services and has taken on leadership roles in the organization.
Academically, Hudson is a member of the EKU Honors Program and Golden Key International Honour Society.
“Speaking as a former student at MMC, I chose to come back as an instructor because of my passion for music and the importance of a music education,” said Hudson. “I think that learning an instrument can help a student exponentially in other areas, not just the ability to play an instrument. MMC is making a presence in the Somerset area, and I want to be a part of the change it is making.”
McNeil Music Center is located at 107 N. Main Street, in the lower level of the Carnegie Community Arts Center in Somerset.
